Tough times during recession call for thrifty measures in one’s New Year’s Resolutions

With the holidays upon us, many people are feeling even more squeezed financially than before. The tradition of writing out New Year’s Resolutions may provide a good opportunity to take a look at where your money is going, look for ways to trim the fat, and align your spending with your values.

Here’s a tip to get you started: is a free service to analyze your telecom bills and find the thriftiest plan for your actual usage patterns. One quick and easy change that I made awhile back has saved me a bundle (about $500/year): I switched one of my phone lines to ACN VoIP. For ~$25/mo. I get everything that I was paying $55+/mo. for. They’ll even sell you a videophone for only $99! I can’t recommend my ACN account exec highly enough; she’ll take excellent care of you and make sure that she’s saving you money. Give her a shout:

  1. Thank you for the tips about ways to save on wireless expenses. I wanted to write a follow-up post discussing another website that, in this case, cuts down the average consumer’s cell bill by 22 percent. Thousands of wireless subscribers are locating and eliminating unnecessary charges by having their cell bills analyzed through by a company that I work for called Validas. By uploading your bill, you can find out for free if you’re one of the eight in ten wireless customers paying more than you need to. If you choose, Validas provides a highly detailed and personalized adjustment report that, for five bucks, is emailed to your wireless provider in industry specific format in order to implement Validas’s cash saving changes to your plan. If Validas can save you more than $5 on your bill (the average customer currently saves $482 annually through Validas), then this obviously provides a cost effective remedy for reducing cellular expenses.

Validas is becoming known as the preeminent advocate for the wireless consumer. Check out a feature about Validas on The Big Idea with CNBC’s Donny Deutsch at Validas has also been profiled in the New York Times and Business Week.

Happy holidays, and good luck to everyone on trimming down wireless expenses in this tough economy when every dollar put back in your pocket really counts.
